I really liked the combat system in the game, and the translation isn't horrid. It's up there with Suikoden and Suikoden 2 as a favorite of mine on the system. I would also like to posit that Legend of Legaia should be on the list. The game went on far too long, and I'm glad I played it on an emulator so I could turn off the speed limit and grind for job classes in a more reasonable time frame. Dragon Warrior VII severely overstayed its welcome. Also, the main character, Claude, comes off like some incel piece of shit that I just despise. If they break stun, you're dead because the AI is so cheap and unfair, and the encounter rate is fucking asinine, with the Scout talent either broken or doing nothing. Star Ocean 2's combat is so boring all you do is spam whatever skill you have to stun-lock the enemy. You see fragments of a story, get the character, and then never hear from them again. I couldn't really get into the characters because the stories felt too disjointed and you just went from one short story to the next without any real development. I don't care for time management in my games to begin with, so I didn't really care for Valkyrie Profile. I have fond memories of the first game from when I was a teenager, but after playing through the series in the last few years, I don't lament its demise.Īs much as I like tri-Ace, I feel like Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean 2 have aged poorly. Hell, Capcom didn't even bother to translate the end credits in Breath of Fire IV. I could not get into the Breath of Fire series. Wild Arms 2 and Legend of Dragoon translations are so bad that they were nigh impossible to even follow along with. Looking through this list, all of these games have abysmal translations that made it extremely difficult for me to enjoy any of them, except Suikoden 2, which gets a pass because it has one of the best stories on the system.
